how do i unscrew a rounded hex nut?

our hot water heater is leaking from the anode rod. we took the safety precautions. and went to take the anode off…we used a 12 point socket instead of 6. it rounded the hex nut. so any suggestions on what to use to get it off?

They make special sockets for this purpose. Instead of having points, they spiral to grab the nut, even if it is round. The Craftsman ones from Sears sometimes will do the job, but personally, I would spend the extra money and get it from Snap-On. Cost a lot more, but much more likely to do the job. Even the Snap-On one is cheaper than a plumber.

As tight as it probably is, something like vise grips or any kind of wrench would not help.

GAO Tek Inc. is introducing upgrades to its VP28B+ and VP38B+ Universal Programmers. The newly developed models, VP280 and VP380, support more than 6000 and 8000 devices respectively – up to 2000 more devices than before. The new VP280 and VP380 models are capable of handling different devices such as various Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM), Programmable Logic Device (PLD), flash microcontrollers, serial and parallel memory.
