How do I learn to make sewing patterns?

I want to sew a few garments but,I want it to be completely from scratch that means I want to make the pattern as well. How would you learn to make patterns though?

I know the basic parts of different items like a shirt or jacket, dress, but I want to be able to make the pattern myself.Suggestions?

I’d probably start you with Don McCunn’s How to Make Sewing Patterns, then send you on to more complete professional books when you’d worked through that. Or the beginning fashion school textbook, Patternmaking Made Easy, which also teaches technical balances — most texts do not.

Or I’d start you with draping, my first love — good textbook is Connie Crawford’s Art of Fashion Draping.

And yes, if you can find a patternmaking or draping class locally, take it! They’re very rare!

Once you understand the power of self-talk and get your inner-voices up to your current age, you begin to understand that self-talk has been expressed in consistent patterns of thought and behavior over the years. Patterns of thought lead to the patterns of behavior that define your life. We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not what you say, but what you do that matters.” Your patterns of thought and behavior define your life.

A pattern of thought is how you view the various opportunities and challenges of the world. Road rage is an example of negative pattern. A five second delay sends one person into a horn honking fury while another person sees the delay as simply part of the driving process. What you associate with a situation is part of your pattern of behavior. The road rager associates being out of control with the delay while a more rational person realizes that delays are as much a part of driving as stop lights.
Phobias are an extreme example of patterns of thought. A person associates an irrational fear with situations that others find harmless.

Jealousy is also an unreasonable pattern. A friend of mine had to get out of the real estate business because her husband was so jealous that if she had to show a home after 5p.m., he would start a fight by accusing her of meeting men. He told me once, “If your wife is out after 5p.m., what the hell are you supposed to think?” This was a man who would not consider the possibility that he was being unreasonable.

Jealousy is especially difficult to deal with because trust can’t be proven, only dis-proven. The jealous spouse is on a quest to prove his or her suspicions.  I had a girlfriend once who would go into jealous fits over the most harmless situations. I was watching a football game with her and during the break, the camera zoomed in on an attractive cheerleader. My girlfriend looked at me, grabbed a pillow, hit me with it and ran out of the room crying. She screamed and threw things for hours. When I finally calmed her down some six hours later, she couldn’t recall what set her off. I certainly wasn’t going to remind her. I did, however, get her to counseling which helped her immensely. Mind you, it didn’t help me because we broke up shortly thereafter. But some lucky guy has a more well adjusted, beautiful girlfriend or wife now, all thanks to me. It’s just my little contribution to the world.

What’s important about these patterns of thought is that they are not on the conscious level. Someone doesn’t intellectually engage in road rage or fear of flying. Your patterns are sub-conscious, which makes them even more powerful. You have consistent patterns of thought that you are not even aware of that are at the root of your self-doubt. This is also why it’s so difficult to make changes in your life. Most people try to change their behavior on the conscious level. For instance, going on a diet is an intellectual decision to change your eating patterns. That relies on will power and will power resides in your conscious mind. As we all have experienced, will power is situational and not that strong. Just go shopping when you are hungry to see how quickly will power can break down.

Your intellect says that if you follow a diet you will lose weight. Why doesn’t it work then? Diets are a struggle because they don’t deal with your sub-conscious mind. A diet places the focus on food. Food is not the problem. It’s your patterns of thought and behavior about food that is the problem.  Dieting doesn’t alter the patterns of thought that led you to put the weight on in the first place. Until you change the patterns of thought, you will continue to relapse back to the poor eating habits that got you in trouble in the first place.

As a martial artist in my teens, I learned about food and the dangers of sugar and empty calories. We were taught a pretty simple nutrition concept that paid most attention to avoiding sugar and keeping our calories low. Because these lessons came to me at an impressionable age from an authority figure, I accepted the programming readily and it’s served me well for over 30-years.
